The Lakes Whisky
The Lakes Whisky can be termed as true holistic whisky because the distillery’s key whisky-maker, Dhavall Gandhi, who has an obsession with flavour, gets actively involved in every stage.
They don’t see distillation, maturation and blending as separate processes but a continuous journey of creating flavours at every stage. Through a slow and long distilling method, the spirits are infused with berries and fruits, creating new possibilities in terms of flavour and aroma.
The Lakes Whisky Story
Inspired by nature itself, the distillery is located in The Lakes District national park within a painstakingly renovated 160-year-old farmstead and uses all the natural resources around it. The Lakes Distillery sought to create a true artisan whisky that expresses this exquisite location through its flavour and experience.
The Distillery was founded in 2011 and is based on the banks of Bassenthwaite Lake, and sources its water directly from River Derwent. It is the only distillery in Cumbria to both produce and distil its spirits on site. The team behind the famous The Lakes Whisky is one with immense experience, from its founder Paul Curries, down to each and every one of the distilling crew.
One distinct feature of the Lakes Distillery is that their descending lyne arms from the stills can send spirit vapours into two different shell and tube condensers, one made of stainless steel and the other made of copper, depending on the style of spirit they want to create. To distil The Lakes Whisky, the distillery uses custom-designed McMillan stills.
The art of crafting some of the finest spirits tasted is intimately intertwined with the landscape and location of the distillery, and with its Scottish and English heritage.
Using personalised casks seasoned with Oloroso Sherry to mature the spirit, the distillery produces whiskeys with an intense personality and complex flavours, with a base of dried fruit, ginger and a firm tannic grip.
The distillery offers both Single Malt and Blended whiskeys, steeped in flavour, aroma, and texture.
